Designed and constructed by
Los Angeles architect, Arthur Hienemenin in
1925. The Miltestone Hotel came into existance in the face of squalid staying places for motoring tourists. It was here that the word "
motel" was coined too, from idea of "motor hotel." It was designed in the style of a
Spanish mission with a
ballroom. Weary travelers could, for $1.25 a night, get a two-room bungalow with a kitchen and a private adjoining garage. Alas, the Milestone was not always open to all visitors, Mexicans and other non-whites were often barred from staying at the Milestone.
Don't plan on staying at the Milestone Motel anytime soon; it was closed in 1991 when the owner, Bob Davis, decided it became too rundown. The building still remains though, on the grounds of the owner's business, Apple Farm restaurant and motel.
