Michael Jack Schmidt was born in Dayton, Ohio on September 27, 1949. He attended Ohio University, and was drafted by the Philadephia Phillies as a shortstop in the second round of the 1971 draft. Described as "an unprecedented combination of power and defense with an unusual mixture of strength, coordination and speed", Schmidt became one of the best players in the game and arguably the best third baseman of all time (although Brooks Robinson might have something to say about that).

Schmidt hit 548 home runs in his career, currently placing him seventh on the all-time list, and his 48 home runs in 1980 are the most ever by a third baseman. In addition to his power, Schmidt also won 10 Gold Gloves for defensive excellence.

Schmidt was a three-time National League MVP, played in 11 All-Star games and 2 World Series, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995.
