Miguel Alcubierre was born in 1964 in
Mexico City, and
took a degree in
physics, and a
Master of Science
in theoretical physics at Facultad de Ciencias (School of Science) of the National University (Universidad Nacional
Autónoma de México, or UNAM).
At the end of 1990 he moved to Cardiff to work towards
a PhD in the area of Numerical Relativity, and
since 1993 he has been working, still with
Numerical Relativity, at the Department of
Physics and Astronomy at the University of Wales.
Alcubierre is probably best known for his 1994 paper
"The Warp Drive: Hyper-fast travel within general relativity", in which he describes a model for faster than light travel,
or the "Alcubierre Warp Drive".
