In Beowulf, The Dream of the Rood and other Anglo-Saxon poems, the expression 'Middle Earth', meaning the normal, physical world as opposed to heaven or hell, is rendered by 'middanyeard'. This corresponds directly to the Norse Midgard.

Compare Utgard, Asgard, Ysgard.
