Located at the University of Chicago, and led by Enrico Fermi, began work towards a controlled chain reaction. Chicago Pile Number One or CP-1 went critical on December 2, 1942. They continued to work on further investigation of nuclear reactions. The most vocal protest over the bomb's use came from the Met. Lab and was led by Leo Szilard.
