Meninges

It has three membranes that surround the spinal chord and the brain:

• the pia mater
• the dura mater
• the arachnoid membrane

Its functions are to protect the brain from injury:

• the outermost membrane is tough
• cerebrospinal fluid between the membranes act as a shock absorber.
