A mechanical engineer is usually a jack-of-all trades, master of none. Knows all about mechanisms, thermodynamics, mechanics of solids, and fluid dynamics. They also have to know all about electronics, computers, microchips, and even programming. Usually involved designing things that move as opposed to civil engineers that design things that don't move, or electrical or computer engineers who move electrons.
