The seminal track from
2 Live Crew's 1989 album,
As Nasty As They Wanna Be. I was twelve years old and took the schoolbus to and from school. My best friend and I would listen to this song every day, on my walkman, during the long ride. We had the entire song memorized, still to this day. Neither of us were aware of the origins of the sample, at least for another year. That was also indicative of our understanding of the lyrical content. What really appealed to us was the beat and syntax of the rhymes. The booming
808 didn't come out too clearly on our crappy headphones, but we could tell it was there, and the neo-disco wah-wahs kept a rhythm that made our heads bop. That's all that really mattered to us. To many in society, however, the lyrics mattered so much that 2 Live Crew released a "clean" version of their album,
As Clean As They Wanna Be, where the word "sex" was replaced with "love," among other changes (the samples remained intact, though). In 1994, 2 Live Crew would go on to defend First Amendment rights (sort of) through the
copyright lawsuit that went to the Supreme Court.
But back to the song. The samples are taken from the Kubrick film Full Metal Jacket, scene 16, Vietnam (These Boots Were Made For Walkin'), if you have the DVD. A prostitute struts up to Joker and proceeds to negotiate with him. You can hear the beat from the Nancy Sinatra song indirectly sampled as well.
The popularity of the song gave rise to other groups such as the Geto Boys, and opened the doorway for acceptance (somewhat) of similar misogynistic lyrics in gangsta rap. It should be noted that 2 Live Crew and their producer, Luke (Skywalker at the time), are not themselves categorized as gangsta.
