American director, born in 1942. He studied to become a priest before deciding he wanted to make movies. Scorsese is best known for violent films, usually set in New York City, in which insecure loners struggle with inner demons, although he has made a number of more personal, less violent movies. He frequently directs powerhouse actors Robert DeNiro, Harvey Keitel, and Joe Pesci, and nearly always has his parents appear in his films. Scorsese is considered one of America's most important directors. He is a champion of film preservation.
