Actress in the early 1930's known mostly for her terrific figure and ability to turn any phrase into a sexual innuendo by mere voice inflection. Things got so bad that the studios had advisors stand off-camera and listen to make sure that she didn't inadvertantly make some innocuous lines sound dirty. Is almost single-handedly responsible for bringing about the Hays Code.

Outstanding Mae West movie lines:

"When I'm good, I'm very good. But when I'm bad, I'm even better."

"Is that a pistol in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?"

"All right boys, what are you studying?"
"Arithmetic."
"Well, I was always good at figures."

"Whenever I'm caught between two evils, I take the one I've never tried."

"It's not the men in your life that counts, it's the life in your men."

And my personal favorite:
"How tall are you son?"
"I'm six feet and seven inches, ma'am."
"Let's forget about your six feet and talk about your seven inches."

One of the tier 1 MAE (Metropolitan Area Exchange) locations. MAE West is located in San Jose, California and consists of 5 OC3c circuits between FDDI switches at each end (according to www.mae.net). An excerpt from the aforementioned website:

Tier 1 MAE locations are regarded as "national" connection points and have a combination of the following characteristics:

  • One or more of the major ISPs (e.g., Sprint, MCI, UUNET, ANS, Netcom, BBN, PSI) connect to the MAE
  • There is a high speed FDDI switch installed offering dedicated higher speed connections
  • The sites designated as Tier 1 MAE locations are MAE EAST, MAE CENTRAL, and MAE WEST
  • Generally, routers with very large routing tables are needed at Tier 1 MAE sites. Examples of these routers are Cisco 4700-M or Cisco 7xxx series routers.

RAF pilots in World War II nicknamed the inflatable life jacket they were issued the "Mae West". The movie star Mae West had a 43-inch bust.

The U.S. Navy and Air Force picked up the term, and it's still widely used.
