Μακαρια

Macaria, which means 'the blessed' was the daughter of Heracles and Deianeira. Macaria slew her father's killer on Oeta. She later took refuge, with her brothers, in Trachis, and then in Athens and when the oracle had pronounced that victory over Eurystheus demanded a human sacrifice, Mecaria immediately offered herself, thus ensuring victory (see HERACLES). To honour her there was a spring near Marathon in Attica which was named after her.
