Lwaxana, as she is so often fond of telling people, is a daughter of Betazed's Fifth House, holder of the sacred Chalice of Rixx and heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed. Her life has been marked by romances and marriages, first to a good friend of fellow Betazoid diplomat Rheittan Grax, last to Tavnian Jeyal (with whom she had a son), and in between her most stable marriage with Starfleet Lieutenant Commander Ian Andrew Troi in 2328.

With Troi she had two children, Kestra and Deanna. Kestra was born in 2329 and Deanna in 2336. Kestra accidentally drowned not long after Deanna's birth and for years Lwaxana suppressed any memory of her and she never told Deanna of her older sister. The suppression lasted until 2370 when Deanna helped her recover the memory and helped her though her grief.

Lwaxana has always had a very interesting relationship with her daughter Deanna. Before Troi's death, Lwaxana had Deanna genetically bonded in the Betazed arranged marriage process to a human named Wyatt Miller. To Deanna's relief, the marriage was called off after her mother and the Millers found they no longer got along and Wyatt ran off with a group of aliens. Lwaxana also has pursued romantic relationships with Deanna's crew-mates and ex-lovers, namely Captain Picard and Will Riker, namely during her Phase in 2365. To her credit, she has been a help to the crew of the Enterprise D by exposing Antedian terrorist bombing while an ambassador to the Pacifica Conference in 2365 and helped her, Deanna, and Riker escape from Ferengi DaiMon Tog in 2366.

Most of her late life she spent chasing after men such as a holographic bartender, Kaelon IV scientist Dr. Timicin, DS9 security chief Odo, and a number of others. After disposing of her servant Mr. Xelo for flirting with her, she was served by a mostly mute named Mr. Homn.
