1901-72 One of the most important theoretical biologists of the first half of this century

Developed a kinetic theory of stationary open systems and the General System Theory. Published over 200 articles on theoretical biology and General System Theory in journals. In the 1940's he conducted his theory of open systems from a thermo- dynamical point. Developed the Bertalanffy-method of cancer cytodiagnosis. developed a holistic epistemology 1966 which sharply criticized the machine metaphor.
