Athens had a range of interesting laws in it's ancient period. it had two very famous lawmakers:
Draco the legislator. his laws (620BC) prescribed death for all who broke the law. even the theft of a cabbage resulted in death. hence the word draconian.
In 594BC a remarkable man, Solon, was appointed archon of Athens with a far-reaching mandate. He canceled all debts and freed those who had become enslaved because of their debts. He declared all free Athenians equal by law.
Legend has it that he declared that the law could not be changed without his permission. He then left Athens for ten years, to ensure he could not be found, and therefore the laws could not be changed.
Solon was a wise man.
