Larvik is a city in
Norway at the end of the
Lågen or
Numedalslågen river in the county of
Vestfold. It is an important port and lumber center on the southeastern coast, which is easily accessible via the
Larvik Fjord. Ships regularly sail from there to all over
Europe and in 1997 the Port of Larvik was appointed the Regional Port of its region of Norway. The city is also the birthplace of
Thor Heyerdahl, a well known
anthropologist with controversial theories about transatlantic contact between ancient civilizations. The city has a population of over 40,000 people and is only 130 kilometers from
Oslo, the capital of Norway.
Larvik is also the name of the largest birch forest in Norway, the northernmost birch forest in the world.
