While chocobos traditionally make the sound "Wark", like in Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VII, the translators at Square evidently decided it was time for a change in Final Fantasy IX. In FFIX, they say kweh, and they say it a lot, including such variations as kweeeeh!, kwehh?! or KWEEEEEEEHHHHH!!!!

I supposed it's just different languages with different ways of making onomatiopoeia. English speakers will tell you that a pig says oink oink, but in French it says groin groin, a fact never ceases to amuse high school French classes.

In any event, maybe Square decided to translate it using the Japanese phoenetic pronunciation, or maybe they decided that chocobos really DO make a kweh sound instead of wark. Another one of those unsolved mysteries of Final Fantasy.
