A town (pop. 11000 or so) in Kainuu, Finland, near the Russian border. Area 5460 km². Founded 1865, became a town in 1986.

The town is famous for many things, mostly because of its great and beautiful nature (Kainuu is a beautiful place), and the chamber music festival that is held every year.

Main product that comes from this area is timber. Historically, Kuhmo used to be a very big tar producer, even on global scale. (Then someone decided that wooden ships weren't "in" anymore. Hmph.)

Kuhmo is one of the important places where Elias Lönnrot collected Kalevala. It was also one of the fierce places of the Finnish Winter War.
