1944-1983. A life-size sci-fi opera-singing action figure, the creation of Bavarian-born chef (and NYC scenester) Klaus Sperber. A sight to see, a sight to hear. Brought to wider notoriety via the efforts of Michael O'Donoghue (Saturday Night Live's "Mr. Mike"), David Bowie, and Nomi's reworking of Lou Christie's classic "Lightning Strikes". Bowie's 1979 SNL performance, with Nomi as a backup singer (in the foreground), is one for the ages.

For the past year or so [I'm writing this paragraph much later, on December 14, 2001], I've been seeing, in the East Village, flyers with Mr. Nomi's face, with captions like DO YOU NOMI? and NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, HERE'S KLAUS. I have no idea what's going on; somehow I doubt this is for a comeback tour.
