1944-1983. A life-size
sci-fi opera-singing action figure, the creation of
Bavarian-born
chef (and
NYC scenester) Klaus Sperber. A sight to see, a sight to hear. Brought to wider notoriety via the efforts of
Michael O'Donoghue (
Saturday Night Live's "Mr. Mike"),
David Bowie, and Nomi's reworking of
Lou Christie's classic "
Lightning Strikes". Bowie's
1979 SNL performance, with Nomi as a backup
singer (in the foreground), is one for the ages.
For the past year or so [I'm writing this paragraph much later, on December 14, 2001], I've been seeing, in the East Village, flyers with Mr. Nomi's face, with captions like DO YOU NOMI? and NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, HERE'S KLAUS. I have no idea what's going on; somehow I doubt this is for a comeback tour.
