After leaving Soft Machine in 1968, Ayers began a wayward solo career with 1969's Joy Of A Toy before forming the exceptionally weird Whole Earth- with Classical composer David Bedford, saxophonist Lol Coxhill and Mike Oldfield- for Shooting At The Moon (1971), Whatevershebringswesing (1972) and Bananamour (1973)- collaborations with Gong- were punctuated by retreats to the Mediterranean whenever success seemed likely, but 1974's The Confessions of Dr Dream And Other Stories saw a more conventional sound.

His collaboration that year with Oldfield, Nico, John Cale and Brian Eno, June 1, 1974, furthered Ayers' leftfield credentials, but Sweet Deciever (1975), Yes We Have No Mananas (1976) and Rainbow Takeaway (1977) garnered little acclaim and saw even fewer sales. After returning to the Mediterranean, the 80s and 90s saw occasional releases, notably 1980's That's What You Get Babe and 1992's Still Life With Guitar.
