慶応

Keiô, literally "rejoicing answer," is the 243rd nengo in the Japanese calendar, corresponding to the period between 1865 and 1868 CE. Komei was the emperor. It was the last era in which the bakufu of Edo ruled Japan.

The major events of the Keio period include:

• The arrival of Britain's first ambassador to Japan, Sir Harry Smith Parkes, and the departure of Satsuma samurai Mori Arinori and Terashima Munenori to Britain (Keio 1)
• The opening of Japan's first steel mill in Yokosuka (Keio 1)
• Tokugawa Yoshinobu's succession to the shogunate, following Tokugawa Iemochi (Keio 2)
• The launch of the gunboat Chiyoda (Keio 2)
• The "Ee ja nai ka" uprising in Kyoto (Keio 3)
• The suicides of Sakamoto Ryoma and Nakaoka Shintaro (Keio 3)
• The Boshin War between Toba and Fushimi (Keio 4)
• The fall of the Tokugawa shogunate (Keio 4)
• The renaming of Edo to "Tokyo" (Keio 4)
• The founding of Fukuzawa Yukichi's school in Tokyo, now Keio University (Keio 4)

The era ended in September of 1868, when the Meiji era began.

京王

The other Keiô is a commuter rail line in Tokyo. It gets its name from the fact that it connects Tokyo (the last character of which can also be read "kei") and Hachioji (the middle character of which is "o"). Limited express trains take 34 minutes to run the entire length of the line.
