Finnish conductor. Principal conductor of the TSO (Toronto Symphony Orchestra) from 1993-2000.

• 1978: Joined the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra as a violinist;
• 1981: Won first prize in the Scandinavian conducting competition.
• 1987: Became principal conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra
• 1993: Appointed Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Recently, he announced plans to flee back to Europe, sobbing in his hanky, at the end of his contract in July 2001. Reportedly the "lack of culture" in Toronto has gotten to him. Oh boo hoo. OTOH, he's quite right to say that Roy Thomson Hall is a pathetic excuse for a concert hall.
