San Francisco Police Officer Jon Cook died in the line of duty on June 12, 2002 after his vehicle collided with another police cruiser in the Mission District of San Francisco at 17th and Dolores Streets around 10:30pm. Both vehicles were responding RLS to arrest convicted felon Monte Haney, who had just brutally assaulted and mutilated his girlfriend.

Cook was a former member of the U.S. Air Force had only been on the San Francisco force since April 2001. He was 38 years old.
