While working to produce a suitable substance to replace ivory in making billiard balls, Hyatt concocted celluloid (1869), the first synthetic plastic, from a mixture of cellulose nitrate, camphor and alcohol.

Among his other inventions were new techniques for sugar refining and textile production.
