In its classic form,
John Coltrane, on tenor and soprano
saxophones,
McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Sometimes Roy Haynes subbed for Jones, and Reggie Workman (or Art Davis) for Garrison. Sometimes other horn&players were added, like
Eric Dolphy or
Freddie Hubbard. In later years, it was a full-fledged Quintet: Trane, Garrison, Alice Coltrane (piano),
Pharoah Sanders, and Rashied Ali; there were often additional bassists, drummers, and horn players.
