German missionary and explorer. Born 1810, died 1881.

Having spent some years in Ethiopia as a missionary, Krapf's next mission was to East Africa (1844-1855). While there, he became (with Johannes Rehmann) the first European to see Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.

An accomplished linguist, Krapf described the languages Geez, Amharic and Swahili and acted as interpreter for Robert Napier's expedition to Ethiopia in 1867.
