An actress known best for her role as character Alex Owens in Flashdance, directed by Adrian Lyne, the popular 80's musical film replete with sexy dancing women and "girl with a dream" gets somewhere. The duality of Beals living by day as a welder and by night as a dancer proved very appealing to the "male gaze," as well as inspiring in some sense for women.

Of course, after 18 years, she's sick of only being known for that role. Other film credits include:

"Four Rooms"

"The Bride"

"The Soup"

"The Last Days of Disco"

"Devil in a Blue Dress"

"Wishful Thinking"

"Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle"

Other films also- mostly forgettable stuff.

Beals was born on December 19, 1963, grew up in Chicago and later attended Yale University. She was classmates with David Duchovney at school and was once recommended for Gillian Anderson's role in X-Files. She was married for 10 years to director Alex Rockwell, but since then has re-married and also acquired two step-children.

p.s. She's a maniac on the floor in Flashdance, but most of her moves were actually "stunt doubled" by a professional dancer.
