Following the embarrassing Confederate loss at Vicksburg, President Jefferson Davis proposed allowing the slaves to fight for the Confederacy in exchange for freedom. In 1865, the Confederacy contacted England and France and offered to abolish slavery in exchange for being recognized as a sovereign nation. Fortunately, the war ended before either country could respond.
