A Detente

I set a lot of traps that first week,
finding them always unsprung, bait tongued off,
and it is not difficult to acclimate
to the night sounds and the droppings
if you apply yourself;
he that wishes to eat the nut
does not mind cracking the shell,
and, for God's sake, give it a name -
mine became Aquinas because he was fat
and, I believe, a Roman Catholic,
unseen every seventh day.
