1997 novel by Peter Carey about a criminal returning to London in 1837 from Australia, with revenge on his mind, but who attracts the attention of a mesmerist. With period slang, attention to character detail, and plot similarities to Great Expectations, this seems to be Carey's homage to Charles Dickens.
