In the Jabber open-source instant messaging system, a server-based component that communicates with the Jabber server to provide a gateway to a foreign instant messaging system (such as AIM or ICQ), or provide another service (such as group chat). Since the transport component resides on the server, Jabber client programs do not need to be updated when a new transport is added, or when a transport changes.
