Ionia is the Ancient Greek name for the western shore of Asia Minor (currently Turkey) south of Aeolis. There were many Greek settelments in the area. The name of the area derives from the fact that most of the cities in it were founded by Ionic Greeks. Ionia was the birthplace of Greek philosophy. The first philosophical school in the world was founded in Miletus, one of the Ionian cities.
