Icelandic spar or optical calcite is a transparent crystalline mineral that has the property of double refraction. In other words, it bends light in two directions; it is a polarizing filter. < /p>

Some people believe that Icelandic spar is the sunstone referred to in Norse sagas. It may have been used by navigators to find the sun on a foggy or overcast day.
