I Was a Teenage Fairy (by Francesca Lia Block) is, yes, a story about a fairy, named Mab, and her relationship with Barbie, who is a young model. Barbie isn't very interested in being a model and is pushed by her stage-mother mom into all kinds of contests and photo shoots. Her father is against the whole thing but basically lets the mother do whatever she wants, even when she goes as far as lying about their last name to avoid sounding Jewish. Barbie retreats from the fake world and the abuse she endures into her own fantasy one, talking to Mab whenever she can and trying to pretend the world isn't happening to her. Sometimes she becomes a person she doesn't know, and sometimes Mab also seems to be putting on a self-assured act. This story is about Barbie's quest to find herself.
