The Hurrians ruled the state of Mitanni, in the same area as what is now Kurdistan. They were eventually subordinated to the Hittite Empire. They are believed to have come from the Caucasus mountains to the north.

Their language was one of two non-Indo-European ones discovered in the imperial archive at Boghazköy in 1906. Attempts have been made to connect it with the North Caucasian languages such as Chechen. In Hittite texts, passages to be read in Hurrian are preceded by the adverb hurlili.

The father of all their gods was Kumarbi, their moon god was Kashku, their storm god was Teshub, his wife was Hebat, and their son was Sharruma.
