The Hucul is a type of pony.

This powerful, though primitive pony is of ancient lineage. The immediate ancestors of the Hucul have flourished in the Carpathian Mountains, for thousands of years. The Hucul is a direct descendant of the original Tarpan, which dates back to the Stone Age.

For centuries they were used as pack animals on mountain paths, over which they carried heavy burdens.

The present-day Hucul is used mainly in harness; it is the standard work-horse for thousands of highland farms in southern Poland and throughout the Carpathians.

The breed has a reputation for being sensible, and extremely docile.
