this stupid mechanism still ticks vainly away:
all those cogs that spun and clicked for years
tooth into slot by turns revolving,
now tug slipping at empty air
where once they fell steadily into place -
still expecting connection,
too absorbed in their turning
to have noticed
the subtle shift in alignment.
