As described on a metal instruction plate in the mens' toilet at Penn State Altoona, in the Smith Building.

  1. Shake excess water from hands
  2. Depress button
  3. Rub hands beneath vent to dry
  4. Wipe hands on pants ( hand carved into the metal instruction plate)

The instructions I remember seeing (before most hand-dryer manufacturers migrated to the more universal pictorial demonstrative instructions) were as follows:
  1. Press butt--
  2. Rub hands under -arm ---
These were of course modified from "Press button; Rub hands under warm air" with any nearby sharp metal object to scratch the printed metal panel on the dryer unit.

Many of these are still around, but I remember the ones from long ago because of a couple of reasons. Of course, these reasons still apply, but don't carry as much weight as they did when I was in second grade.

  • The novelty factor: warm rushing air is much cooler than scratchy brown cardboard-like paper towel.
  • Press butt. Rub hands under arm. Tee hee. Toilet humor is great.
damn! why doesn't E2 just support <strike>?!
