Annual music poll of the year's 100 hottest songs as chosen by listeners of ABC radio station Triple J. Triple J is a government funded, non-commercial radio station and hence the Hottest 100 is (supposedly) immune to all commercial marketing influences.
The counting down of the Hottest 100 is held on Australia Day, the 26th of January.

Triple J is a national alternative station. They try not to play mainstream stuff, they try to play a lot of local bands. They just don't play Teeny-Bopper stuff, you will never hear Britney Spears on JJJ. Likewise they are not a dance station, they play some dance music, they have spots devoted to dance music, Mix-Up on Saturday nights being the most prominent, but it isn't a dance music station. People who want to listen to dance music and little else don't tune in to JJJ regularly.

So, the One Hundred is contains the following:

• A lot of Australian bands.
  It is a National Aussie poll, JJJ supports tours by local acts and plays a lot of their music. Plus we like our own distinct sound, thus the inordinate number of Australian bands.
• A lot of songs that were released near the end of the year.
  The voting for the Hottest 100 takes place at the end of the year, if there is a really cool song playing at the moment, people will be more inclined to vote for it over one that barely remember from 9 months ago.
• The occasional "oddball" song.
  Eg. Machine Gun Fellatio - Mofo On A Motor Cycle being in the list two years running. Asshole - Denis Leary coming Number One in 1993, Detachable Penis - King Missile and Mindless Drug Hoover - The Reefer Song making it into the list. All these songs are quite amusing in their own way, and people find them funny, and thus they find there way in.
• Music that young people like
  This one is rather obvious. The majority of JJJ listeners fall in a certain age bracket. JJJ being part of the ABC and thus indirectly run by the Government can pretty much say what it wants. There is no censorship on JJJ, if a song has Fuck in it, or talks about controversial things, JJJ will play it no worries. This keeps away the too young and to too old and so you get an in between bracket.
• Other general popular acts.
  This is not "pop" music, rather a high proportion of The Cure and similar acts.
