helm's alee

Exclamation made by the skipper of a vessel to the crew before coming about. After the skipper receives verbal confirmation from the crew members that they are ready, the skipper turns the tiller to the leeward side of the boat, bringing it into the wind. "Hard alee" is another variation of the phrase.
