Epitaph found on many tombstones put up in the Roman Empire and also other Latin-speaking parts of Europe later on. The Latin abbreviation stands for "Hic situs est" or "Hic sepultus est", meaning "is placed here" (in the male form). The inscription is sometimes expanded like H.S.E.B.Q. (Hic situs est, bene quiescat). The modern counterpart of H.S.E. is R.I.P.
