Politically, the area of Southern England around London which used to be under the control of the GLC (until this was abolished by Margaret Thatcher in 1985) and is now under the jurisdiction of the new GLA.

Physically Greater London is a roughly oval-shaped area, almost completely built-up, approximately 45 miles east-west and 30 miles north-south. It has a population of between 7 and 10 million, depending on time of year, day of the week and exactly how the border is defined.
