The hour immediately following a traumatic injury or the onset of a heart attack or stroke - the E911 system is designed specifically to get patients into the operating room within this hour.

In urban emergency care, the focus is on getting an ambulance on the scene as soon as possible. In the wilderness, however, there is little or no chance of getting help that fast - the golden hour turns into a day or more.
