Gnus, allegedly the largest program ever written, is basically a news reader. It can also be used to read mail, files in your directories, SOUP packets, web search results... and whatever you can write a backend for. BTW, if anyone is listening, a slashdot.org backend would be cool.

Oh, and you need Emacs to run Gnus.
