A graphical symbol used singularly or conjunction with other symbols to convey an idea, thought, event, object or other thing.

Examples include the characters that make up the English character set and the ideographs that make up the written Chinese language.

A stricter definition from some other site would seem to exlcude any image of more than one color. Oddly this same site defines heiroglyphs in terms of this monochrome version.

A sunken channel or groove, usually vertical. See Triglyph.
