An occasional avant-garde big band; original nucleus (1966) was the Peter Brotzmann Trio and the Schoof/Schlippenbach quintet (a pool that included future Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit). Alex von Schlippenbach organized it for much of its 20-year existence. Globe Unity gave composers and improvisors a chance to extend the ideas of free jazz to the larger palette of the orchestra.
