A Glasgow Doorknocker is the tool of choice for police forces and Customs officers in the United Kingdom. Essentially consisting of little more than a sizeable steel pipe with handles (insert UNIX joke here), it allows easy entry through most non-reinforced doors by virtue of its superior momentum. Its name probably comes from the fact that certain parts of Glasgow (namely, the Gorbals) are a little primitive, and that the air of rough and readyness it exudes is similar.
