In Japanese drama, one popular trope is the giri-ninjo conflict. Roughly translated, this is the conflict between a person's Duty (giri) and a person's personal Desires (ninjo). However, giri involves far more than Duty as Americans understand the word, for giri involves a person's responsibilities, obligations and vows as a means to provide him or her with a sense of self, with a life's purpose, with a place in the moral/ethical universe, with public esteem, and much more.
