Geena Davis was born in 1957 in Massachusetts, and over the next two decades she grew to be six feet tall, square-jawed, and ginger-haired. After leaving school she was originally a model, until making small appearances in 'Knight Rider', 'Tootsie', 'Fletch' and a couple of short-lived television series (not to be confused with the equally short-lived 'Geena Davis Show' from 2000), after which she embarked on a Hollywood career which continues to this day.

Her most famous roles are in 'The Fly', and 'Thelma and Louise', and she's also quite well-known for being an Olympic-class archer. Also worth noting is the film 'Earth Girls are Easy', in which she wears a very tight-fitting swimsuit. She has been married four times, including to Jeff Goldblum and the film director Renny Harlin.

As film stars go, she hovers around the boundary between a- and b-list; whilst she's instantly recognisable, and people like her, she isn't, by herself, a box-office draw. Whilst married to Harlin the couple produced three consecutive box-office disappointments, of which 'Cutthroat Island' was so expensive (it cost $80 million and grossed $11 million) that it bankrupted Carolco - an impressive feat, given that the studio was also behind such films as 'Terminator 2', 'Basic Instinct', 'Stargate' and 'Total Recall'.

According to 'The Movie Times' website the 16 films in which she has so far appeared have grossed an average of $42,000,000, the most popular being 'Tootsie', 'Stuart Little' and 'A League of Their Own' in that order.

I must mention two other movies she has acted in; both roles I feel suited her perfectly.

The Long Kiss Goodnight, in which Geena plays an amnesiac former-government-spy, with wonderful supporting acting by Samuel L. Jackson, is a movie my family has watched repeatedly and still loves.

Cutthroat Island was a cheesy pirate movie I was introduced to last night by my father. It was fun.
