Dorothy L. Sayers's 1935 detective novel. Set mainly in Oxford, it deals with responsibility towards society versus personal claims, love, intellectual and emotional honesty, and other issues. Sayers thought this her most&important novel. More to the point, it's the book in which after 5 years of trying to escape her past, Harriet Vane finally finds herself (and can at last realize she loves Peter Wimsey).
