Gallia Braccata, or "pants-wearing Gaul," was a sneering epithet that the Romans gave to the lands north of the Alps, because the Gauls wore pants, or braccæ in Latin similar to those worn by the Scythians and the Persians, with pants thus being seen as a sign of uncivilized barbarism.
